justina blakeney blog give away…..

9:36 pm

The Hmong are a group of people from the mountainous regions of ChinaVietnamLaos, and Thailand. Hmong are also one of the sub-groups of the Miao ethnicity in southern China.  I had seen pictures of Hmong people before–and fell head-over-heels in love with the bright, sometimes even florescent clothing and accessories. I found a skirt at Shareen Vintage in her ‘costume area’ that was a wrap-around and fell in love with it–not only because I knew I’d be able to wrap it around my waist throughout my whole pregnancy, but it was made of this thick, beautiful linen with tons of little pleats. Score. I didn’t know where the skirt was from, but while shopping on Etsy recently, I came across another, similar one that said it was Hmong–and that got me doing Hmong clothing and accessory searches all over the web. The search let me to the most beautiful and vibrant pieces–with intricate patterns, embroideries, lots of pom-poms (which you know I love) and one helluva a color palate–not to mention gorgeous, chunky silver jewelry.
Today I’m doing a round up with some of my favorite Hmong designs I found on that search.  One of my favorites is a vintage Hmong tribe cushion cover that is made from old Hmong baby carriers from Thailand. This cushion will be given to one lucky reader by Gypsy River, an Australia-based blog and shop that carries striking pieces from around the globe. (The pillow is valued at $93.) To enter the giveaway you must be a follower of this blog– Next visit the Gypsy River blog and shop: Gypsy River and leave a comment here stating which item you’d love to have in your home (be sure to leave your email in the comment so that I can reach you if you are the winner). This giveaway is open to readers worldwide. The giveaway will close on Friday, April 6th at 5pm PST. Good luck!

a day antique shopping….

12:11 am

I found myself being inspired by beautiful antique handicrafts from Thailand,Lao,Burma,Cambodia China and India in this amazing house ….A collection which has been in the making for over 30 years!
As I enter the store I was greeting by a beautiful Thai lady who watched me as I admired and asked many questions about her precious wares…..her family brought out a tray of cold waters…it had such a great feeling, you could tell it was a family business they were so proud of.
As I had finished wandering around the 2 rooms on offer, she took me by the arm and out through the family kitchen and opened a door… there was suddenly a beautiful garden full of more treasures and 2 more rooms full of antiques… was like I had gained her trust and she only offered these other spaces to people who were really interested in her wares….
Such a great experience, one I will not for get!!
a great message in service for retailers who want to make a difference, it can be the small things that count..its about creating a memory ( my old retail background coming out)
if in Chiang Mai be sure to stop by BILAN open daily, and they offer shipping to anywhere in the world…
How could I resist not buying anything, my Budda plus 5 monks and 3 antique glass paintings are heading home to Australia.
